When a classic twelve-cylinder engine is assembled in Maranello, what happens there is remarkably close to what goes on in the workshops of Geneva’s watchmakers. Hands guided by experience and decades of tradition put together a mechanism that is not merely meant to work, but to work beautifully. Enzo Ferrari never built cars for everyone. He built them for those who understand. Manufactures such as Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet think exactly the same way: family heritage, no compromises, and handwork even where a machine would be faster. Faster, perhaps – but never better.

Patek Philippe says you never actually own one of its watches; you merely look after it for the next generation. Anyone with a thirty-year-old Ferrari in the garage knows precisely what that sentence means. Such a car is not a means of transport but a piece of history you will one day pass on.
